BRAG web site: Following discussions with Kath, the revising of this has been postponed until after the holidays.  Web software, WordPress, and the possibility of using one of the social networks  eg. Facebook  will be considered.                               ONGOING PH KR CB AD

Noticeboard: Patti and Hugh will replace AGM stuff. HP PH

Outer London Fund for Brentford: Reminder that the Spring Market will be held in the Market Square and Market Place on Friday and Saturday 17th and 18th  February. Live music and entertainment will play a prominent part at these all day and evening events. Please encourage as many people as you can to attend! ALL

West London Waste Authority: As requested at the AGM, Sarah Ellissent us details of how we can help her organisation: Actions discussed are shown in red.

  1. Help us identify as many groups that meet in the community as possible. We can give presentations and workshops to parents groups, young adults, gardeners, flower clubs, scouts etc but we need to know they exist and where they meet. It’s also usually far easier to have a named contact.  Virginia and Hugh are collating the details of their contacts and will submit them shortly.
  2.  Identify places where events can be held, whether this is cookery demos, give and take, bring days etc, any buildings are good including churches, pubs, community centres etc. Sara Ward is really happy to help with all the items where her name appears. Her contact details have been forwarded to Sarah.
  3. Stand up and be counted – put yourself forward as a real person to accompany us to talks, say you’re a food waste champion and become an example to others.

Sarah should let us know details and we will arrange for one of us to attend.

  1. Suggest to groups with land that they could host a textile bank, some companies will pay a group to host a bank for them. We will check with one of our members who is part of a church group who may be able to accommodation.            (Sara Ward, Bless)
  2. Do you know of any courses around fashion and textiles, we want to promote these and tap it to their creativity to be part of events or challenges. Ruk thinks there is someone at Brentford School for Girls.      Phoebe (Part time employee at Brentford Library) might point us in the right direction. Action still to be taken.
  3. Use the Brag website to promote businesses that repair items to help people not to throw as much away. Harrow FOE have a good example. When our website has been updated and is up and running this is certainly something we can do. ONGOING
  4. Help us find real nappy users who are willing to stand up and say they use them, they don’t have to use them 100% of the time.  Many mums in Brentford Dock – Hugh will publicise. Sara Ward (see next item).
  5. If you know any health professionals that will be willing to tell people there is an alternative to disposable nappies let us know – we can contact them or you can pass on our details. We don’t want to say they’re the only choice, we just want a chance to allow the exploration of washable instead of disposable. Suggest Doctors surgeries, baby clinics.  Hugh also recommended that B A Williams, (a very cooperative) chemist in Albany Parade, could be approached with a view to promotions to his customers. Sara also chairs the Advisory Board for the local Children’s Centres and could look at a real nappies strategy to roll out there.
  1. Share your tips to waste less with us and I’ll put them on the WLWA website http://www.westlondonwaste.gov.uk/in-your-area/your-top-tips/   We agreed we would send our tips individually to you for your website.  Brag members will be reminded at frequent intervals to do so.  THIS CAN BE AN ITEM ON OUR REVISED WEBSITE.
  2. Look at our website and give us feedback about the content, I know we’re missing a lot of information we could potentially put on it but tell me what you want to see or help me fill the gaps.                      ACTION ALL MEMBERS.
  3. Help organise a swishing event in Hounslow, I can talk you through how – essentially we need a venue and people to be there on the day to sort what is given before people can start taking items away. I could do a meeting with you on that if you wanted. We thought a good location could be the Docking Station on Brentford High Street.  We may have to pay a fee, but it won’t be very large. Otherwise, Hugh could perhaps make arrangements for the Residents Club Room at Brentford Dock, although it probably wouldn’t attract any passing trade, not like the High Street. ACTION PROBABLY IN THE SPRING.

Other suggestions:

MORPH: Organisation who recondition old white goods for resale to poorly off people.  Hugh will get details of a contact. ACTION STILL TO BE TAKEN

BRAG NEWSLETTER: Andrew is keen for us to do a newsletter which could probably be delivered with the High Street Newsletter.  Volunteers will be required for this. The contents could include:

  1. Publicity for Swishing/swap shop events, West London Waste Authority, BRAG, Green Drinks, Friends of the Earth etc. Transition Brentford
  2. Advertising on TW8.
  3. New Brag website.
  4. Publicise Brag meetings
  5. Recycling – charity shop at Age UK, Brentford Toy Library
  6. Articles/information items from LBH Recycling Team – “Hot news”.
  7. Include a quiz – what recycled items reappear as.
  8. Feature on Marian Gilbert (of “Glad’s Club”), who collects used postage stamps, old/broken jewellery, spectacles etc. from which funds are raised for charities.
  9. Feature on Rukmini and her many and varied ongoing achievements.
  10. Sara Ward, Hen Corner?
  11. Paul – his gardening and gardens, work with young people.
  12. Emma Perkins (Founder of Brag).
  13. Messages: Recycling is now good compared to when Brag began in 1999.  Well done LBH! We need everyone to pass this message, and why recycling matters, helping to keep Council tax down, minimising land fill etc.
  14. Pictures should be included in most items.

We will try to get something drafted in a few weeks.

Brentford High Street Steering Group is working with the London Borough of Hounslow and other partners to apply to the Lottery Sustainable Living Communities fund. (Expression of interest to be in at end of January) – up to £1M will be available to just ten communities across UK.
